finished the great blind ride

Posted on Mon ,04/07/2011 by Roei Sadan

I know ask my self the same question that I asked 5 years ago when I looked at the map of the world.

“from where to start???”

its been amazing and busy 2 weeks, weeks that I know that I will remember for long time.

the great ocean road!

the great ocean road!

Me and orli(the blind lady that join me) had another 500 km to go before finishing our journey in Melbourne.

It was about time to meet the” great ocean road” in Victoria coast,, a really famous rout in south Australia with dramatic views from cliffs to the ocean. In one word amazing.

Its been a little cold and some times wet but it is the winter so it was OK in a way…

with the time we started to understand each other more and more. To cycle with someone all the day it is a big challenge for me because I used to be alone with no one to share this amazing places.

sights from the great ocean road

sights from the great ocean road

Orly told me that she enjoying the sounds of the parrots and bird, she can feel the ocean and the green hills that we climbed.

and here we got a cow

"and here we got a cow"

After 2 weeks together we knew what kind of music we both love and shared some wisdom from the road.

Orly cant see almost anything only some lights but I can tell you that she saw more things that this planets has to offer then most of the people that I know and they got 2 eyes that working fine.

touching the sea

I loved to see that even if she blind she cant see the obstacle that life bring us.

Cycling with her taught me many things that I didn’t know about me and it was learning time for me.

“in dreams begins responsibility” and for me it was new feelings to always see if everything is OK for some one else, 4 years alone on a bike and I got so much to learn for the future.

We had with us Asaf with the camper van that made us everything more easier and comfortable, cook for us and gave us escort and its nice to know that there is always some one that wait for you with a hot tea or coffee… he did good job to help Orly with her needs in the time that I wasn’t with her on the bike, its not easy work ,believe me , but asaf did it with love and when he needed to rest he had is smoking time with amazing ocean views.

the great Asaf

the great Asaf

Orly is strong woman and I didn’t think for a second that I am doing all the work on the bicycle and we pushed each other while I am telling her stories from the world and she is telling me stories about Israel just to help me with the up coming future.

enjoying the last days

enjoying the last days

One day I shared with Orly the landscapes that we just crossing. And when we stopped to take some photos I saw that she is got tears that going down from her eyes to her cheeks, I didn’t know why its happen and didn’t want to talk about it so I just hug her and we continue our trip and only days after she explained why she cried:” its really frustrated to see a little and now I cant see anything and you are excited from landscapes that I cant see so it was a sad moment for me”

we got to the city of Geelong in the outskirts of the big city of Melbourne and it was the end of our journey.

This 2 weeks were more challenging then I thought more then any desert that I crossed, with a lot of emotions, good and bad, with moments that I never thought that I will have in this journey.

Maybe because I was in extreme “lonesome” and needed quickly to adjust my self for another extreme of “together” with a blind person that I don’t really know before, it more then just a blind date

guest are coming to breakfast

guest are coming to breakfast

we hugged and celebrated this great achieving in Melbourne and we know that we will have more rids in the future.

I learned a lot from this 2 weeks, as a human being and as adventurer that want to push other people for there challenges in life.

I learned that I can see more with a blind person next to me.

I would like to thank anyone that helped orly and me in this great massage and I hope to share with you all the thoughts and moments in my book one day.

Orly has gone back to Israel and I soon I will write about the amazing time in the city of Melbourne.

where amazing happens

After all the preparation and the excitement of this new chapter in our journey it was about the time to start riding , but now it much different from any day that I had in the last(almost) 4 years…

I am on the front of a tandem bike with a blind lady behind me and a lot of responsibility ahead of me.

We needed 2 days to understand each other and I felt amazing to be with Orly on my back.

special time

special time

we got an escort camper van with us with Asaf , a friend of Orly, that helping us on the road, driving the camper van and cooking for us, also my friends Jacky and daphni helped us on the first week of the journey.

with the escort gang...

with the escort gang...

For me It is so different to cycle with some one and much more different to cycle with a blind lady.

Orly enjoying the smell of nature ,the trees and the ocean and smiling when she hearing the beautiful parrots on the road.

I try to do as much as I can to explain orly what i am seeing and where we cycle.

“now there is big fields and farmers that waving there hands for hello”

“we crossing now a big river” and more…

2 on the road

2 on the road

cycling together is like a relationship, we need to understand each other needs and to compromise on some of the things, orly saying that she give me a lesion from the real life before I will finish the journey.

I used to sleep in my tent and cook for myself and now I got a escort car and all the “treats “ that involved in this kind of a journey.

“i am the part of the travel in your journey “ orly told me after she felt that I feel weird with all the new stuff around me.

We are doing almost 80km a day , its cold but fortunately with out rain on us.

We talk a lot while we riding , we talk about everything and I know a lot about her as she know about me. Orly is a keen cyclist a 49 years old woman that know how to “squeeze” life until the last drop.

Actually , I think that she saw more places on earth then most of the people with eye sight that I know.

She is so independent and like to do things in her way that sometimes I am forgetting that she cant see.

All the things that I look for granted are different to her.

I learned how she got the blindness and how big is the frustration of losing the little eye sight that she had 10years ago.

She is very keen to know how is the ride in different parts of the globe and I am sharing with her some stories from the road.

In the last years people asked me if I am doing this big journey for “something” or “some one” a greater cause and not “only” for myself.

I always answer the truth and that’s my dream and as an adventurer and human been I like to do the best as I can while I am still breathing. Some of them are a little disappointed but I tell them them that I am talking in schools and then they “agreed “ with my goal…

if someone tell you that he is going around the world for years and years for a cause and not for himself you can tell him that he is a liar… and I think that from my actions people will learn how to look inside them self and try to search for there dream and the ride with orly will help me to send this message to the world.

In the last week we cycled in south Australia and now we are about to meet the great ocean road we hope that the weather will be nice to us and that orly will join the ride as much as we can.

In the next week we will get to the city of Melbourne before orli will go back to Israel.

“there is Many places to see “ she told me …

We are still looking for help (money) to orli and if someone want to contribute for the challenge you are more then welcome to send me a note to :
