The Meetting with Kili mountain

Fri ,02/10/2009

The city of Arusha in north of Tanzania was like an island for me, island of tourists that are coming to make safaris in the amazing parks in the area and climbing the highest mountain in Africa the Kilimanjaro.
In Arusha I met Yonatan an Israeli guy that traveling 3  last years in Africa and India so we had good talks and it was nice to remember with him the amazing places in India and Nepal.
After 3 days of rest I felt that I need to move and decided to do the way to Kenya in my way so I added 2 days to cycle around Kilimanjaro (Kili) , you know that I have a big part of my heart to the mountains and for Kili I wanted to feel it as I can, one day I know that I will do this 7 days easy climb to the top of it.
The first days was not so interesting on the main road and the mountain was under the clouds so I could not see him but in the first night in Kenya was something to remember.
Alone in the middle of no where and it’s me and the mountain, sunset and sunrise on the kili….Something to write about.

After that I cycled on the main road to the Kenya’s capital Nairobi, and it was busy and noisy, all the big trucks that coming from the coast mad me feel how small I am and my beard was black becaus of there smoke.
The night before the big city I took a small road to get out from the highway to find a good and safe place to sleep. I had a company of zebras and genus  on the road. I I felt like I am sleeping inside of safari , 60 km from Nairobi I felt like I am sleeping in a zoo.
The city of Nairobi was hard to enter big trucks and traffic all over… but now I am happy to get some rest and a good shower that I lost 2 kg of dirt and smoke…I am staying in a nice hostel and went to meet the people from the embassy and we are  going to do some work together. Tere are now hollidays in Israel and at this time of the year I miss more then ever my friends and family. Cycling alone in Africa is more lonely then I thought and some time the locals get to my nerve. The cycling is not hard physically but mentally you need to be super strong and don’t let them get to my head. Next weeks I will do my way to Ethiopia there I am going to meet the Shapira family for 2 days so I am excited.

The road in North Kenya is known for their robbers and the buses going with an armed escort of the police so I will see what I am going to do , its going to be interesting.

Love you all

The world

It is a small world after all

When you crossing Africa you need to get used to the changes of the countries really fast, when I entered Tanzania I needed to start to learn some Swahili in order to get a long with the people and to survive on the road. So how much is it, hello, thank you, yes, no, go away, I am hungry, food, I am tired were the first words that I learned… People are very nice and they always wave and smile to me so it makes the beginig easier.
For the first look it seems that Tanzania its more developed then Malawi and Mozambique there is food on the road and the roads are good (the main one…), maybe it is because there are many Muslems, almost no people drunk in the middle of the day and police is  all over the places, so it gives you some secure feeling. The cycling in the beginning was on the main road so it was busy and not so interesting landscapes but after some days I went to the dirt roads where everything is more special and interesting. In some stretch of the road I saw more monkeys then people and the big baobab trees are looking at me from high above.

In every small village there is a place to drink chai (tea) and chapatti (bread) and I remembered good days in India. The menu is written on the wall …Because of the language problem and the places that I have been where there are not many whites (with unique beard…) I was a small tourist attraction   in every small villages and I felt like an alien when every one talking about the AZUNGO and I cant understand them…

This is the real Africa. I was so excited to see in the middle of nowhere the famous Massai tribe that living in Tanzania and Kenya, they are so impressive people, very strong and beautiful.

It was nice to see that they are very proud of there culture and always wearing earrings and necklaces, even then they work, most of them got a lot of herds of cows and goats.
Amazing experience was to learn from them about their gods (the baobab trees) and their ceremonies, we dance and we laugh on our meeting. Then we danced it was one of the funniest moments that I had in life (see it on Youtube). Nothere is the land of the Massai and they are everywhere.
Yesterday then I was heading for the big and very touristy city Arusha in the north of Tanzania a car stopped and the people came to me and they were Israelis that recognized me from  the TV…It was really worm meeting to see them and to talk Hebrew after long time. They gave me chocolates from Israel and for some moments I felt in home. If  in the middle of nothere people recognized me in Israel it means 2 things: It’s a small world and its big journey
